Character lore

The people behind the banners.

Every race in the world has a face and a past. Eight characters — one per race — whose stories set the tone for the people you'll meet in EncryptedSMP. Open any card to read the full backstory.

Warden of the Silverwood

Aeliana was born the year the towers of the Silverwood were still scaffolding, and she has spent every season since watching them grow. When the Long Winter emptied the roads, she was the one who kept the lantern paths lit for refugees the other houses had already written off. She holds the oldest record book in the world and knows exactly which of its pages the other realms would rather she burn. She greets strangers politely, remembers everything they say, and has never once told a lie she couldn't undo.

Whisper of the Hollow Reaches

Serath trades in things people would prefer forgotten: ledgers from collapsed settlements, keys to doors that no longer exist, names of the dead that were meant to stay dead. She was exiled from the shadow realm for publishing a truth its elders had buried for a hundred years, and took the punishment as a promotion. Now she runs a quiet operation out of the Hollow Reaches, moving people and secrets across borders. She is unfailingly courteous, charges fairly, and has never betrayed a client — though she has never promised not to remember.

Claimant of the Crownlands

Corwin's father farmed a valley that no longer exists — it was swallowed by the Long Winter, along with most of the family's claim to anything. He arrived in the Crownlands with a borrowed sword, a broken cart and a talent for getting people to agree with him in a room. Two rival claimants, one disputed throne and a great deal of unfinished wall later, he is the least likely and most persistent of the three. He does not want a crown so much as he wants the valleys rebuilt, which is exactly what makes him dangerous to the people who do.

Clan-Chief of the Iron Marches

Grulka took the Iron Marches the way clan-chiefs always do — she beat the last one in front of everyone and then fed the whole stronghold for a week. What the marches remember is the winter after: when the northern wilds pushed south, she held the pass with sixty warriors and no supply line, and gave the last of the grain to the families behind the walls. She has little patience for courtly manners and a great deal of respect for anyone who keeps their word. Her clan's gates are open to travellers who ask properly, and closed to anyone who doesn't.

Stone-Speaker of the Deep Holds

Thrain broke the seal on a shaft the Deep Holds had closed for three generations, and came back up with a map he refuses to explain. Officially he is a stone-speaker: he reads a rock face the way scholars read a page and can tell you which tunnels will hold and which will bury you. Unofficially he is the reason the forges have been running day and night since the Long Winter ended. He signs every ingot he sells, pays his miners before he pays himself, and keeps a locked room at the bottom of the hold that no one in the clan will discuss.

Keeper of the Hollow Shires

Pip keeps the shire's ledger, which is not a book of laws but a book of favours: who fed whose family through the winter, who lent a cart, who never paid it back. As a result the Hollow Shires are officially undefended and quietly untouchable — nobody raids a place where half the continent owes it a meal. Pip has never held a weapon, has never needed one, and negotiates treaties over second breakfast with the patient insistence of someone who has all day. The tavern's back room is where the real agreements get made.

Apprentice of the Arcane Enclaves

Isolde came to the enclaves with one question her masters could not answer: what actually caused the Long Winter. Three years of marginal notes later she has a theory, a locked cabinet of failed experiments and a growing suspicion that the answer is written plainly in records everyone else considers settled. She is meticulous, chronically over-prepared and the only apprentice who files reports the elders read twice. She has not cast anything impressive yet, which she will tell you is the point — she wants to understand the spell before she's allowed to use it.

Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge

Aldric's tower holds every spell the enclaves have declared unteachable, catalogued, chained and — in his words — resting. He was a respected scholar until he argued that a dangerous spell understood is safer than a dangerous spell forgotten, at which point he became a cautionary tale with an excellent library. He takes one apprentice a decade, answers questions honestly, and never demonstrates anything he hasn't first written down. Travellers who bring him a genuine mystery leave with an answer, a warning and a bill, usually in that order.

The world

Kingdoms rise here. Then they're remembered.

No one wrote this world from the outside. Every road, ruin and throne in it was put there by someone who logged in, picked a direction and started. What follows is the history the server has agreed on — the eras that shaped it.

The chronicle

  1. Era I · The first age

    The First Landing

A scattered handful of settlers arrive on an empty coastline with little more than stone tools and a shared map. The first shelters are carved into hillsides, the first roads are simple dirt tracks, and the earliest disagreements are over water and firewood.

  2. Era II · The founding

    The Age of Founding

Settlements harden into something permanent. Stone replaces timber, walls go up, and the first claims are marked. The races draw their borders not by treaty but by building — a keep here, a hold there — and the world starts to have a shape.

  3. Era III · The fractured years

    The Long Winter

A hard season empties the fields and fills the roads. Trade routes collapse, old alliances are tested, and several early settlements are abandoned mid-build — their walls still stand today, quiet and half-finished, waiting for someone to claim them.

  4. Era IV · Now

    The Rebuilding

The world is repopulating. Markets reopen, new kingdoms are declared, and the ruins of the Long Winter are being reclaimed one foundation at a time. The history being written right now is the one players will read next season.

Build your legacy

More than a house and surviving the night.

EncryptedSMP is an opportunity to establish a place in a shared world. Players can focus on architecture, exploration, resource gathering, trading, farming, and community development.

01

Architecture & settlements

Massive stone fortresses overlooking valleys, bustling marketplaces, hidden woodland villages and underground Dwarven cities filled with mines and workshops.

02

Trade & economy

Develop trading activities, open a shop, supply builders with materials, or build your fortune as a merchant moving goods between kingdoms.

03

Community & legacy

Over time your creations become part of the world other players explore and remember — a name attached to a place, not just a build.
